Pre-Race Muni Service

Starting at 5:45 a.m.:

  • The 5-Fulton express bus will depart from Fulton Street and 47th Avenue, making local stops on Masonic Avenue, then travel express to 1st and Mission streets.
  • The N-Judah express bus will depart from Judah Street and La Playa, making local stops on Masonic Avenue, then travel express to 1st and Mission streets.
  • The N-Judah will run from Judah Street and 19th Avenue to Embarcadero Station.
  • Muni Metro service will run from West Portal to Embarcadero Station, but will not stop at Civic Center, Powell or Montgomery stations.

Additionally, express bus routes 1AX/BX, 9AX/BX, 31AX/BX and 38AX/BX will run on a modified schedule.

Post-Race Muni Service

In addition to the local routes that serve Golden Gate Park, there will be downtown express service available on both the north and south sides of the park. These services will be the fastest ways to downtown. Passengers must purchase a Special Events sticker in order to ride these shuttles. Fare and purchase locations are listed below.

SOUTH SIDE - Express Shuttle To Downtown (via West Portal)
Located on the south side of Golden Gate Park, at ING Footstock.
Please note that this is an improvement to the typical shuttle service that has been provided at this location in the past. Express buses will pick up passengers adjacent to ING Footstock. These buses will travel express to West Portal Station where you can transfer to an inbound Muni Metro train to downtown. The Metro connects with BART and Caltrain.

NORTH SIDE – Express Shuttle to Downtown
Located on the north side of Golden Gate Park.
This is a NEW shuttle express line that has been added for 2009. Express buses will pick up passengers along Fulton Street at 30th and 36th avenues. These buses will travel express to Davis and Pine streets.

Fares

Special event fares are $7. Be sure to purchase your Muni fare in advance to speed up boarding and avoid lines. This fare is valid on all express and local service until 5 p.m. Please note that this fare is not valid on cable cars or the 74X-Culture Bus. Exact change is always appreciated. Fares are available for cash purchase at the following locations:

Alameda/Oakland Ferry

Departure

Special early morning service on Sunday, May 17, 2009. The special service leaves Oakland’s Jack London Square at 6:45 a.m. for Alameda’s Main Street Ferry Terminal. It will leave Alameda at 7:00 a.m., and arrive at the San Francisco Ferry Building at 7:25 a.m.

Return

Return departures to Alameda and Oakland leave from the San Francisco Ferry Building at 1:25 p.m., 5:10 p.m., 6:45 p.m., 8:25 p.m., and 9:55 p.m.

Parking

The Oakland Ferry Terminal is located at 530 Water Street, near the intersection of Clay Street and the Embarcadero, Jack London Square. Free parking is available at 101 Washington Street. The Alameda Ferry Terminal is located at 2990 Main Street, and free parking is available adjacent to the terminal.

Fare

Tickets can be purchased onboard the ferry. One-way fares are: adults, $6.25; juniors ages 5 to 12 years old, $3.50; seniors and disabled persons, $3.75; and children under 5 years old, free.

BART

All stations will be open at 6 am, running 15 - 20 minutes apart thereafter, until regular Sunday service begins at 8:00 am.

Please be advised that the Embarcadero Station street-level elevator will be closed for 3-1/2 months beginning May 4, 2009. This closure will be in effect on Race day. While the Embarcadero Street elevator is closed, BART and Muni riders should exit at the Montgomery Street BART/Muni Station. The Montgomery Station elevator is located on Market and Sutter, approximately 3-1/2 blocks from the location of the Embarcadero Station street elevator.

Caltrain

Three northbound special express trains will be available to take you to the race. One-way tickets, Day passes or 10-ride tickets can be purchased at the ticket vending machines at the stations before boarding. Tickets must be purchased before boarding, and Caltrain fares vary by zone. On weekends, your Monthly Pass is valid for unlimited rides between all zones served by Caltrain. If you are using 10-ride Ticket or complimentary passes on that day, you must validate before boarding. Sunday trains depart the San Francisco station 15 minutes after the hour from 8:15 a.m. until 9:15 p.m. Fare and schedule information is available here.

Charter Buses

Charter buses must park along Sunset Boulevard south of Irving parallel to Sunset Boulevard. Buses must park in the curb lane, leaving the intersection clear. In case of emergency, the San Francisco Police Department requires that drivers remain with the buses while they are parked. No picnics or barbecues allowed.

Fare

To ride one of the 4 added departures, the One-Way Adult Cash Fare is $7.45 and Children 5 and under ride free (limit two/adult). Discount Programs DO NOT apply for frequent tickets book users and youth for passage on any of the 4 added departures. Only discounts for seniors and persons with disabilities apply.

To avoid lines at ticket office on the day of the event, please purchase your tickets in advance. Tickets are not sold for a specific departure and vessels will be boarded on a first come, first serve basis.

Golden Gate Transit Bus Service

Parking - Embarcadero Center (AMPCO)

Special parking rate for registered race participants only. On race day, all-day parking at the Embarcadero Center will be just $10 for registered Breakers. This is a huge discount off the normal all-day rate. Just show your race bib at time of payment to get the special rate.

SamTrans

SamTrans is not providing special ING Bay to Breakers service this year. People are encouraged to seek alternative public transportation options. Caltrain will be running additional services to offset the discontinued SamTrans race day schedule.

Vallejo Ferry

Departure

The Vallejo ferry departs from the Vallejo terminal located at 495 Mare Island Way at 6:30 am and arrives at San Francisco's Ferry Building at 7:30 am. This is a special service on Race Day.

Return

The return ferry will maintain its regular schedule of weekend return stops to Vallejo from Pier 41 and the Ferry Building. Call for departure times.
